"Everyone has a tabula rasa upon entering my classroom."

I employ the Socratic Method and actively promote inquiry. Asking questions with more than one potential outcome allows for more personal input. I give students clear instructions by providing a model of our goals and how it will look when they have completed the task. By setting realistic objectives and checking for understanding through progress monitoring, I am able to judge how students respond to the material. Reflection and summative assessments are important in gauging student progress and continuing to be an effective teacher. Scaffolding is an imperative tool for differentiating teaching styles for kinesthetic, auditory, and visual learners. It’s crucial to know which reading and listening activities will enhance receptive skills and how to improve productive skills through speaking and writing. While being aware of these strategies is crucial, tapping into the students’ prior knowledge encourages conversation.

Students face significant obstacles when they don't have access to a pluralistic education. As a teacher, I strive to be accessible to my students, community, and colleagues. I have a genuine desire to make a difference in the world. Teaching and leadership among the diverse community at Bellevue College, especially in the area of marketing education, is a means to that end. The “one size fits all” approach is not an appropriate response to a complex problem. As a professor with an authentic interest in learning the unique customs and perspectives of my community and beyond, I am well-equipped and passionate about handling the rigors of modern post-secondary education.

As a lifetime learner with a thirst for knowledge, I work diligently to foster an open-minded, culturally appreciative classroom where nobody is afraid to ask questions. My students, motivated by my authentic enthusiasm, are expected to perform at a high standard. I connect with students regardless of culture, gender, and socioeconomic status. I serve as a model of service and informed global citizenship. Everyone has a tabula rasa upon entering my classroom and will have the same opportunities to achieve success as anyone else in the room. Discipline has an important role in my philosophy, as well. Justice is restorative, as rehabilitation is more important and effective than punishment. It’s necessary for everyone to be on the same page regarding rules and expectations from the first day of class. It’s important to set up a classroom that maintains order so that I am able to focus on instruction.

In order to present marketing in a meaningful context, I research and create supplementary materials that are relatable to each student, which empowers them to take ownership of their own education. I am meticulous in modeling my classroom after an actual business, which helps students see the importance and outcomes of learning the fundamentals of business. In doing so, it’s crucial to take into consideration the specific needs of each person. The opportunity gap can manifest in many facets of education, such as a student's culture, familial situation, community wealth, and even English proficiency. The future of our students should not be jeopardized because they were born in a certain area code or socioeconomic condition. These factors perpetuate the vicious cycle in which students with fewer opportunities have the cards stacked against them in achieving success at the collegiate level. Every student should have the same opportunities to reach their potential. Everyone on Earth should have the same access and rights to education. It is counterproductive to perpetuate a system which discriminates against people for subjective and biased reasons.
